It is so great to have one place where we can check each others adventures.
This keyboard is a bit of a challenge so this will be a tiny bit brief. I am still living with the Taneichi`s until monday or tuesday so it feels like i have not yet arrived so to speak. Once i have a car, get upacked, and as Bill says close the door i think i will settle down a bit.
Yesterday was an entire collage of activities starting at 3:30 in the morning with Taneichi-San. We with 5 other people to go fishing in his boat. After shuflling the boats around and some chatter that i did not understand, no one speaks English, we all got aboard only to have the battery not work. So no fishing and more sleep. Fair trade i guess. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese breakfast, steamed mussel miso style soup, baked fish with diakon radish and soy, a salad like situation, rice, and i think they gave me a piece of toast as a parting gift. Everything here is served in tiny little cups, bowls, or plates, which i like very much. Mom it`s like one crayon per tiny serving thing. So my breakfast seemed more like eating dinner, but was very good.
There are 12 Korean students that Rokkasho is hosting, so myself and the other JET from Germany went along with the days activities; traditional tea ceremony, a visit to the Nuclear Facility JNFL (coincidentally i had a beer with the Vice President at some other festival earlier this week), lunch was kind of a hot pot with meats and veggies, trip to the Aomori Aquarium (my favorit thing was the jellyfish), then we made our way to the Nebuta Festival in downtown Aomori. This is the one of Japan`s 3 largest festivals. Floats are made of paper, painted, and lit from below. They are absolutely spectacular. I will post some pictures when i am using my own computer. We got dressed up in traditional garb and were part of the parade, changing and hoping in the rain. There were bells pinned to our outfits so it made quite a sound and there were traditional Japanese drums going really lound. Talk about being placed smack dab in the middle of another culture… did i mention i still haven`t even seen my apartment
The day ended with a lovely moment between Mr. and Mrs. Taneichi and i sitting around the dinner table talking. We didn`t understand everything, but there were many smile, wine, and food. Seems like there is always food.
Before bed i was able to aquire a FAN!!! which made sleeping in the rain a perfect way to end the day.
I love you guys!!!
Time for French Toast!
